Verve Eastside - August/September 2008 www.newsletterfactory.co.nz
If anyone had told Ruby Francis when she was a child she would end up spending her days waxing women's nether regions she would have laughed at them.
But Francis has built her reputation and her Newton-based business Ruby Waxx largely around her expertise in Brazilian waxing.
Brazilian waxes have become the norm now and when somebody comes in and asks for just a bikini wax I think "what?"
Francis admits waxing suits her fast paced personality. Born in Palmerston North, Francis moved to Auckland when she was six years old and grew up in a physically active family. With her mum, a PE teacher and her father a well-respected triathlete it is no surprise then that when Francis left high school she taught aerobics for ten years. It was a combination of having children and injuring her back that saw Francis look for a job she could do from home. Beauty therapy ticked all the boxes so she trained for her qualification and set up shop from her home.
"We do from girls aged fifteen right up to sixty five year old women."
Which could be why Francis has now given her love of all things feminine full reign with her funky hot pink salon. Francis says she has deliberately turned her back on all things "flowery and fluffy" and bans "supermarket music" and tea light candles from her salon. Instead the atmosphere is relaxing and easy going with staff wearing jeans and pink t-shirts.
Ruby Waxx offers all the usual treatments including massages, sun beds, eyelash treatments, facials, collagen treatments, glycolic treatments, electrolysis, bleaching, and hair removal by IPL. But is it their 15 minute Brazilian wax guarantee (so you aren't in pain for any longer than you have to be) that is probably one of the most popular. A private lounge upstairs caters for group bookings such as hen parties, birthdays and corporates. Francis admits the hen parties can sometimes get a bit raucous and remembers one time when the bride was blindfolded but instead of a relaxing massage was brought in for her very first Brazilian!
Francis has three children - Quinten, 18, Joshua, 13 and Laura, 8 - and in her spare time likes to spend time with the family. She also runs half marathons and practises boxing for fitness.
"I never sit still, I'm always on the go. I don't do anything slowly. For example I don't do the massages or facials - my staff do those. I like waxing because [it's fast and] you can see instant results." She grins. "And once you've had a Brazilian you'll never go back."
