The number of treatments depends on skin and hair type, colour and thickness. Most people require between six and ten sessions.
The hair is removed by controlled flashes of light, which is absorbed by the hair-filled follicles lying below the surface of the skin. It's the pigment in the hair shaft that absorbs the light. The resulting heat damages each follicle and disables it. The dead hair shaft appears to grow and then fall out: this may take a week or more.
Treatments should be at four week intervals, to treat hairs at all stages of the growth cycle.

What do I need to do before a treatment?
Avoid sunlight where possible - and if you do go in the sun, wear a good quality sun block (if you don't have any, you can purchase some from us). Why? Treatments work best when there is a wide contrast between the colour of the hair and the colour of the skin, i.e. dark hair and pale skin. So winter is a good time to have hair removal treatments - and then you'll be nice and hair-free when summer comes.
If you're having an IPL treatment for hair removal, the area can be shaved.
What happens during a treatment?
First of all, we'll need some health and medical details from you so that we can safely administer the treatment. During the treatment you'll be asked to wear dark glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from the bright light. If you're having hair removal the hair is shaved or trimmed before the treatment. Next, a cold gel is spread over the treatment area. The hand piece is applied to the skin and pulses of light are flashed onto the treatment area.
Does it hurt?
Each pulse of light feels like a slight sting or pinch, similar to the snap of a rubber band. Most people don't find this painful.
Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are rare. You may experience slight reddening or local swelling at the treatment site but this typically goes away in a few hours. On rare occasions blistering or bruising may occur, but this normally resolves within a few days too. Also, the skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimise the risk of complications.

The laser treatment creates a consistent improvement in skin tone and appearance over the course of the treatments. The number of treatments required depends on several factors related to your skin and the type of lesions being treated. Sometimes as few as two treatments achieve excellent results, but sometimes a few more are required to achieve the desired level of improvement. We'll be able to give you a realistic expectation during your consultation.
